Has Social Media Really Connected Us?

When Al Gore coined “Information Superhighway” in the 1990s, few predicted where it would lead. Social media promised global connection—and delivered a paradox instead. We live in the most connected age in history, yet we’ve never been so isolated. This essay explores how platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook transformed us from passive consumers into “prosumers,” creating a booming creator economy. But algorithms designed to capture our attention have left us scrolling for hours, photographing moments we don’t experience, and comparing ourselves to curated perfection that corrodes self-esteem. The platforms aren’t inherently good or evil—they’re tools that reflect human desire. Whether they represent progress or decline depends on how we choose to use them. Free will remains. The question is whether we exercise it.
